Control freak. Not me. Controlling. no way. Gets anxious when not in control. Nope. Likes to organize. Yes. Tends to call the shots in a group. Yes. Gets… antsy when someone else is in charge. MMMM, sometimes. It’s funny, most people do not like to admit that they like control. It’s a stigma, I guess. Or else they are lacking a bit of awareness, even if others have suggested (in a walking on eggshells way) that control is their MO.
And I don’t want to suggest that being comfortable in control is a negative thing. Lots of individuals who find control comforting do great things because of it. Organizing, leading, taking initiative are just a few things I see. Again, strengths and weaknesses (or not strengths). But I will say, having to have the control blanket wrapped around you at all, or most times can get in the way. If I’ve learned anything by talking to people for quite some time is that nothing is constant and you only have control of you. That can make things very uncomfortable if you feel everything is chaos without control.
Maybe just do a little check in. How comfortable are when you don’t call the shots (that doesn’t include asking someone what they want then manipulating the conversation so that they make the same decision you would)? Are you OK letting go, being spontaneous, going with the crowd? Again, not a negative thing. Just double check that this way of being doesn’t get in the way in certain circumstances. Otherwise, go change the world.
